Mahon or Mao lying at the eastern end of the island is the administrative capital with a population of approximately 25,000.

The British influenced Georgian-style architecture would not look out of place in London.
Mao has the largest natural harbour in Europe and the city stretches along the south side of the vast inlet.

Most definitely a city to explore on foot as the narrow streets and one way system make driving impractical.

Distances between the main sights of interest are short with many cafes around the squares to take refreshments and watch the world go by.

The city’s main land mark is the church of Santa Maria and dates back to the 13th century. The church houses a 3000 plus pipes organ built in Austria in 1810 and is the focus of the Mao Organ Festival in July.

Near the church you will find a market selling the local cheeses, meat, fruit and vegetables.
The area around the harbour is abuzz with restaurants and pavement cafes giving the harbour a wonderful atmosphere.
