A car can be useful for days out during a Son Bou holiday, but you may not need one for your entire stay. Start by deciding when you want to drive, how you will reach your accommodation and how much luggage you need to carry.

For 2027, compare the complete arrangements for your dates rather than a headline daily price. Collection instructions, vehicle space and payment requirements can matter just as much as the rental charge.

Airport or Son Bou collection?

For either option, check collection and return times, late-flight procedures and any out-of-hours or different-location return charges before committing. Resort collection should be confirmed for the actual booking; this guide does not promise a particular Son Bou collection point.

Hiring a car for part of your holiday

You could keep the first few days free for your accommodation and local plans, then arrange a car for the outings you want to make. Alternatively, collecting at the airport may fit better if you expect to drive most days. Neither option is automatically cheaper.

Compare a quote for the exact shorter period with one for your whole stay, adding airport transfers, extras and any collection or return charges. Ask about minimum hire periods and how the chosen return time affects the charge. Do not assume that returning early will produce a refund; read the applicable terms.

Choose for passengers, luggage and child seats

Count bags as carefully as seats. A vehicle with enough seats may still lack boot space for everyone’s suitcases, a pushchair and beach equipment. If you need every seat in a people carrier, ask specifically about luggage space with all those seats in use.

• List your luggage: give suitcase sizes and mention a pushchair, mobility equipment or other bulky items.
• Check the specification: confirm transmission, passenger capacity and any essential accessibility requirements.
• Ask about child seats: provide the children’s details and confirm the suitable restraint, availability, fitting arrangements and charge. Check current Spanish child-restraint rules before travelling.²
• Read the vehicle description: treat an example photograph as an illustration, not a promise of a particular make or model. Get any essential requirement confirmed in writing.

What to check before booking

Keep the quote and the terms applying to it. The following questions help you compare what you are actually buying.³

• What is the total charge, in which currency, and what is payable locally?
• Who supplies the car, and who should you contact about a change or a problem?
• Are additional drivers, child seats, mileage and collection charges included or extra?
• What fuel level is required on return, and what happens if it is not met?
• What are the cancellation, amendment, late-collection and late-return terms?
• What driver-age and licence-holding requirements apply?
• Which documents and payment card must the main driver bring?

GOV.UK currently confirms that a UK photocard driving licence can be used in Spain. Check the latest guidance and the supplier’s document requirements before your 2027 trip; rental eligibility is a separate condition from permission to drive.²

Insurance excess and security deposits are different

An excess is the amount you may have to pay towards a covered claim. A security deposit is money held or charged under the rental agreement. Ask for both amounts, the accepted card type, whose name must be on the card and the release arrangements.

Separate excess insurance may reimburse eligible charges after you pay the rental company and make a claim. It does not automatically remove the supplier’s deposit or card requirement. Check exclusions, limits and the claims procedure before buying cover.⁴

Ask what the rental’s included cover and any optional waiver actually cover, including exclusions. Avoid treating terms such as “full insurance” as a guarantee that every charge is covered.³

Parking and planning your days out

Ask your accommodation whether parking is provided, whether it is reserved and whether a charge applies. For each outing, check current official access information, parking signs and any seasonal restrictions. Do not assume that a map route takes you to a permitted parking place or that a beach can be reached by car.

At collection and return

Inspect the vehicle and have existing damage recorded before driving away. Take clear photographs for your records, check the fuel level and keep the rental agreement and emergency contact details. At return, follow the agreed fuel and handover instructions and retain the return paperwork.⁴
